Louis Gossett Jr. was a highly respected and beloved actor, writer, producer, director, and social activist in the entertainment industry. He made history as the first African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and received numerous other accolades throughout his illustrious career. Gossett Jr. also dedicated his efforts to humanitarian work, founding The Eracism Foundation, which promotes cultural diversity and anti-violence initiatives. He had an extensive film and television career, and his bestselling autobiography highlighted the challenges and triumphs of his 50+ year journey in the industry. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he began his stage debut at 17 and continued to leave a legacy until his passing in 2024 at the age of 87.
