Scatman Crothers, born Benjamin Sherman Crothers, was a versatile entertainer known for his songwriting, acting, composing, singing, comedic talents, and guitar skills. He had a successful career in nightclubs, hotels, films, and television, and was a member of ASCAP. Crothers' popular-song compositions include "The Gal Looks Good", "Nobody Knows Why", "I Was There", "A Man's Gotta Eat", and "When, Oh When". He passed away at the age of 76 from pneumonia and lung cancer in Van Nuys, California.
